Women’s History Month is an annual celebration observed in March in honour of the contributions women have made in history, including their vast strides in contemporary society. This day is celebrated in several countries including the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
Since 1910, March 8th has been observed annually as International Women’s Day by people across the globe. Initially, Women’s History Month was observed as Women’s History Week until 1986 when numerous states in the US declared March the month of celebrating women’s contributions.
The celebration of women’s contribution to society dates back to 1911 when women’s achievements were commended during International Women’s Day. In 1978, the school district of Sonoma, California, pioneered the prolonging of this celebration when they participated in Women’s History Week, a holiday which was arranged throughout the week of March 8th and marked International Women’s Day. Later, in the following year, a 15-day conference focusing on women’s history was organized at Sarah Lawrence College, together with the Smithsonian Institution and the Women’s Action Alliance. The members, upon gaining knowledge about the success of the Sonoma County Women's History Week, resolved to establish the same observances in their school districts, organizations, and communities. Additionally, they joined forces to promote the institution of a National Women’s History Week. The efforts of these participants became fruitful in February 1980 when Jimmy Carter released a presidential declaration decreeing that the week of March 8th, a National Women’s Week.
